Nick started as an apprentice groundsman at Reeds School in 2006 and became Deputy Head Groundsman there at a remarkably young age, looking after five cricket squares widely regarded as some of the finest wickets in Surrey — a venue trusted by Surrey County Cricket for its junior sides and ladies' first team.
He went out on his own in 2017, and spent eight years transforming East Molesey Cricket Club. He inherited an outfield of moss and wickets with almost no bounce, rated among the worst in the league. He left it with wickets rated among the best, back-to-back Surrey Championship Premier Division titles in 2020 and 2021, and the league's best outfield in 2022. International players including Kane Williamson and Adam Zampa have played on wickets he prepared.
He founded Sports Turf Limited in 2022 to bring that same standard to venues across the south of England.
Trained under Philip Mayers — later lead pitch agronomist for the FIFA World Cup 2022 and head groundsman at Al Bayt Stadium — with whom Nick still keeps a regular dialogue.
Nick holds sole responsibility for the surfaces at some of the most demanding venues in the region.
Sole responsibility for both the main stadium at Plough Lane and the club's training ground — preparing and maintaining the playing surfaces for first team, u18s and matchday, to professional football standards throughout the season.
Plough Lane also hosts Chelsea Women's first team home fixtures for the 2026/27 season — a surface prepared to Women's Super League standard.
Sole responsibility for Surrey Cricket's second venue at Guildford, preparing first-class wickets and outfield to the standard demanded by county championship cricket.
Maintaining 12 grass courts at the home of the Surbiton Trophy — an international ATP Challenger grass-court tournament and the opening event of the British grass season, with centre court televised live on the BBC.
